Abstract

Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat is one of the cultural centerpieces in Indonesia, especially in Yogyakarta. It is the official palace of the Yogyakarta Sultanate. The outdoor area of Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat is covered with gardens, yards, and plantations. The plantations that were planted in the area of keraton are the selected item of trees that have philosophical symbols in Javanese culture. One of the most selected numbers of items planted in the area of keraton is Sawo kecik. In Javanese culture,the Sawo kecik tree reflected deep philosophy. This paper is aimed to trace the existence of Sawo kecik time by time and in several places, both inside and outside the Yogyakarta Sultanate palace building. Besides that, this research wants to explain the philosophy of pohon Sawo kecik which is the typical vegetation of the Yogyakarta Palace. The author uses qualitative research methods; data collection in the research is carried out using primary data in the form of observation and secondary data from several related works of literature. Sawo kecik is a philosophical symbol of the Javanese people for the value of goodness. The existence of this tree, like the meaning of the name Sawo kecik—sarwo becik—in English means reminding a person to always do good and be in good condition, to always do good in all things, whether thoughts or actions. It is hoped that people inside the palace and outside the building of Keraton Yogyakarta will get good value and benefit from the Sawo kecik tree.
