Abstract

Tourism development on Kalimantung Island triggers a series of environmental and sociocultural implications. The purpose of this study is to determine the implications of tourism development on Kalimantung Island for environmental sustainability and to determine the implications of tourism development on Kalimantung Island for social and cultural sustainability. The research method is designed with qualitative research with descriptive analysis techniques. The results of the study prove that tourism development efforts on Kalimantung Island are supported by the Central Tapanuli Tourism Office. Environmental implications are increased waste production and damage to marine biota from the physical contact of tourist activities which are overcome by waste control programs and environmental studies. Cultural implications are seen from the acculturation of foreign cultures that erode the authenticity of local culture and social conflict as well as positive implications in the form of cultural preservation, community and fisherman involvement, along with the formation of local tourism communities. In conclusion, the environmental and socio-cultural implications of Kalimantung Island are the effects of development which are then reviewed through a sustainable perspective with a program to eliminate the negative implications of tourism on Kalimantung Island in order to realize sustainable development. The research suggestion is that the Central Tapanuli Tourism Office needs to develop stakeholder partnerships. Decentralization of tourist areas, because there are so many tourist attractions in Central Tapanuli that tend to be visited by many tourists. For subsequent researchers, please improve the research.
