Abstract

This study examines the role of the local community in managing the Bandar Bakau Dumai ecotourism area as an effort to realize sustainable tourism. The research adopted a qualitative; case study methodology, utilizing field observations and interviews. The findings suggest that local community actively participates in various aspects of tourism management, including mangrove conservation, development of tourism facilities, and operation of small businesses around the site. Community involvement is largely driven by economic benefits, while awareness of sustainability principles still needs to be improved. Collaboration between the local community, environmental activist groups, and private sector actors such as PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan has contributed to the development of the area as an educational ecotourism destination. This research highlights that strengthening comprehensive community engagement is vital in mantaining the sustainability of community-based ecotourism in Bandar Bakau Dumai.
