Abstract

This study aims to identify factors that influence the motivation of young climbers in carrying out hiking tourism activities on Mount Sindoro, especially related to perceptions of safety and risk. Mount Sindoro is one of the popular hiking destinations in Central Java that offers natural beauty but has challenging and risky terrain. This study uses a qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research informants consisted of young climbers, porters, and basecamp managers. The results of the study indicate that climbing motivation is driven by various reasons such as the desire to challenge oneself, seek peace, follow social media trends, and gain experience. On the other hand, the level of physical readiness, completeness of equipment, and understanding of risk play a major role in maintaining climber safety. Perceptions of risks such as hypothermia, steep terrain, and extreme weather are important factors in decision making before and during the climb. This study suggests the importance of adequate safety education and provision for young climbers and the active role of basecamp managers in maintaining safety standards.
