Abstract

Goa Maria Sendangsono is a pilgrimage tourist destination that has important spiritual and historical value for Catholics in Indonesia. As a pilgrimage tourist area, the presence of Goa Maria Sendangsono not only has a spiritual but also economic and cultural impact on the people of Semagung, Kulon Progo. This research aims to analyze the economic and cultural impact of the existence of the Goa Maria Sendangsono pilgrimage tourism on the people of Semagung. The research method used is a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through interviews, observation, documentation and literature review. The research results show that economically, the existence of Goa Maria Sendangsono makes a positive contribution by opening up business opportunities, increasing welfare through additional income, and opening up employment opportunities. This economic impact does not cause significant price disparities or excessive dependence on the tourism sector, so that the community's economy remains stable and sustainable. The local community is involved in various economic activities such as selling souvenirs, food, flower sellers, grocery stores, homestays and providing facilities for pilgrims. From a cultural perspective, the existence of the Goa Maria Sendangsono pilgrimage tourism area does not replace or shift the local culture of the Semagung people, there was no significant cultural exchange between traders and pilgrims, and there was no commercialization of culture but rather a cultural preservation strategy. In this way, social norms and cultural identity of the community are maintained without significant changes. Based on the research results, it is recommended that the Semagung community can take advantage of business development training provided by the parish and the government. Apart from that, the management of Goa Maria Sendangsono needs to systematically collect data on pilgrim visits in order to obtain more accurate data regarding the number and diversity of pilgrims who come from various regions.
