Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the efforts made to preserve the Chinatown villages in the Kranggan and Ketandan areas of Yogyakarta City, and how these efforts contribute to increasing tourist appeal. These areas hold significant cultural and historical value, reflecting the acculturation between Chinese and Javanese cultures, as seen in their architecture, traditions, cuisine, and community activities. However, rapid modernization and development pose threats to the local identity. A descriptive qualitative method was used in this research, collecting data through observation, interviews, and documentation. The study shows that community-based conservation involving the government, businesses, and local residents can sustainably enhance the appeal of cultural tourism. It is proven that preservation approaches involving the protection of historic buildings, development of cultural attractions, and historical education can increase tourist interest while maintaining authenticity. This research provides important recommendations for developing local cultural preservation and heritage tourism amid globalization.
