Abstract
The Turgo-Merapi Tourism Village has great potential as a conservation tourism center with well-preserved natural landscapes and strong local culture. The development of tourism in this village has been included in the Master Plan for Tourism Development of Sleman Regency (RIPK), specifically in Article 17, Paragraph 2, Item b, which emphasizes the development of Turgo as an environmentally-based tourism area (ecotourism). However, preliminary observations in July 2024 indicate that the principles of ecotourism have not been fully implemented. Therefore, this study aims to identify the implementation of the five basic principles of ecotourism, namely conservation, education, recreation, economy, and community participation in the Turgo-Merapi Tourism Village. Using ecotourism theory, basic principles of ecotourism, and tourist villages as the foundation for analysis. This research uses qualitative methods with a non-participant observation approach and semi-structured interviews with the community and village tourism managers. Based on the theory used, this research explores the extent to which the TurgoMerapi Tourism Village has implemented the concept of ecotourism-based tourism. The research results indicate that conservation aspects have begun to be implemented, particularly through the cultivation of Merapi orchids, coffee, and tea, as well as the restriction on the sale of native orchids to preserve the ecosystem. However, education has not yet developed optimally due to the absence of a systematic learning-based tourism program. From a recreational perspective, the village has natural attractions and activities such as bird photography, trekking, and cultural rituals, but their management is still limited. Economic aspect, the benefits of ecotourism have not been widely felt by the community due to their minimal involvement in tourism management. Community participation is still low, so the economic opportunities from tourism are not yet maximized. To address this issue, it is necessary to strengthen educational programs, improve tourist facilities, and provide training for the community to be more active in managing ecotourism. Future research is expected to focus on more effective ecotourism development strategies to provide greater benefits for the local community's economy.
