Abstract

Local genius is a cultural element that must be explored, examined, and revitalized because its essence is so important in strengthening the foundations of national identity to face the challenges of globalization. The question that arises is whether the values of the local culture as the basis of national identity is still relevant to be revitalized in dealing with various issues in this globalization era. The problems addressed in this study are to find the historical, economic, and aesthetic values existed at the Tasikmalaya craft; and how does the umbrella craft pass down from the older generation to the younger generation. The outcome of this research are, first, a Geulis umbrella is a product based on local knowledge that characterisize a Tasikmalaya society. the Geulis umbrella crafthas cultural, economic, and aestheticsignificances; and the existence of Geulis umbrella today isnearly extinct.
