Abstract

Indonesia is a rich country in terms of culture. A culture that has been shaped by the community and becomes a regional identity needs to be preserved in order to remain exist in spite of the changing times, so that in forming and preserving the culture of society needs the community’s role. Gamelan is a traditional musical instrument which is used to be a companion art wayangan, ludruk, Ketoprak, reog, musicians and others. Therefore, it takes the role of the community to maintain the existence of gamelan in Indonesia. This study implemented a descriptive qualitative design. The data was taken in the village of Paju, District Ponorogo, Ponorogo. Data sources of this study are interview of human beings by interview to maker, player, and listener; observing and documenting. Analysis of the data used is data reduction, presenting the data, SWOT and drawing conclusions. Checking the validity of the data is done with perseverance observation and triangulation. Based on the data obtained, it is known that the role of villagers in Paju District of Ponorogo Ponorogo in preserving the gamelan musical instruments are: producing gamelan with the aim of preserving, continuing the family business and economic needs, form groups of karawitan and make contest of karawitan witch be held every year.
